Our Shrinking Attention Spans

Mar 22, 2023

In recent years, our attention spans have been shrinking steadily. New data from the American Psychological Assocation suggests that there are a variety of factors behind this statement. A large factor in this is our time spent online, and frequency of attention switching. Over time, our attention spans have shrunk to a mere 47 seconds. The popularization of internet usage and our constant need to multitask have only aided the degradation of our attention spans.

Why our attention spans are shrinking, with Gloria Mark, PhD (apa.org)

There is a correlation between frequent attention switching and stress. The increased stress that comes with multitasking also slows performance over time due to something called “switch cost”. A “switch cost” occurs when we must redirect our attention to a new activity, which takes time to get accustomed to. Our usage of social media, online games, checking emails, etc. all have an impact on our attention span.

Children are also more vulnerable to the effects of screen time on their attention spans. The more screen time a child has, the more susceptible they will be to distractions, and a lower ability to regulate attention.

So how can we improve our attention spans? Taking scheduled breaks and reducing screen time can be helpful in increasing attention to work. Additionally, engaging in healthy activities such as meditation and exercise can help you rebuild your attention span.
